Beyond the Quick Fix: Why Fundamental Theories Still Matter in an AI Era

As AI increasingly delivers instant answers and seamless solutions, many have begun to question whether learning fundamental theories and concepts still holds value. This article is a philosophical exploration of why, even in an age of intelligent machines, the pursuit of deep, conceptual understanding remains essential to human thought, judgment, and growth.

We begin by examining Bloom’s Taxonomy—a hierarchical framework that classifies learning objectives by cognitive complexity, from simple recall to advanced analytical, evaluative, and creative thinking. To ground this framework, we explore a straightforward example drawn from financial education, illustrating how each level of Bloom’s Taxonomy supports deeper learning in the age of AI.



Next, we explore Constructivism—a learning theory that posits knowledge is not passively received but actively constructed by the learner through experiences, reflection, and interaction with the world. Learners build new understanding by connecting information to their existing knowledge. They seek to make meaning from these experiences through thoughtful reflection and interpretation.

To illustrate this, we turn to an example from options trading, showing why AI cannot replace learning. Learning is not a one-time answer but an ongoing process—one that builds upon fundamental theories, prior knowledge, and the learner’s ability to integrate new information meaningfully.


In this example, the AI’s solution may not lead to profit—not because the recommendation is flawed, but because the trader lacks the foundational knowledge to adapt it.
Without an understanding of how factors like volatility and time to maturity affect option value, the trader can’t integrate new information or adjust their strategy in a dynamic market. The AI’s output remains static, while real-world decisions require ongoing interpretation and adjustment—core aspects of constructivist learning.

Furthermore, relying on AI for answers without a strong grasp of the underlying subject matter can weaken our epistemic foundations. Bottazzi Grifoni and Ferrario (2025) examine the challenges of communicating with large language models (LLMs)—a type of advanced AI trained to generate human-like text. Their work emphasizes that human conversation relies on a network of contextual and social cues to sustain coherence—elements that LLMs lack, as they operate through statistical pattern-matching rather than genuine comprehension.

What appears to be “understanding” in exchanges with LLMs, the authors argue, is often an illusion—a kind of bewitchment arising from the model’s ability to simulate language fluency and our tendency to attribute meaning too easily. The paper challenges the assumption that understanding can be reduced to pattern recognition or statistical correlation. Instead, it argues that true epistemic engagement requires constancy in reference points, sensitivity to negation, and the ability to track contradictions—capacities that current AI models still struggle to demonstrate. From a learning perspective, this critique underscores that knowledge is not just about receiving answers or information. It involves navigating ambiguity, resolving contradiction, and interpreting meaning within context—skills that are cultivated through deep learning, not easily replaced by automated responses.

In addition, developing a solid epistemic foundation through the study of theories and principles can help combat the epistemic challenges posed by reliance on AI. According to Coeckelbergh (2025), AI influences the process of belief revision in three primary ways: (1) by directly manipulating beliefs, (2) by creating epistemic bubbles that reinforce particular viewpoints and limit exposure to diverse information, and (3) by defaulting to statistical knowledge, which can result in epistemic confusion and bias. These influences can undermine an individual’s ability to exercise epistemic agency—that is, the capacity to take control of one’s belief formation and revision—by making it more difficult to critically evaluate information, question prior beliefs, or update those beliefs in light of new evidence.

Consider epistemic bubbles as an example. These are environments in which individuals are predominantly or exclusively exposed to information and viewpoints that confirm their existing beliefs. AI contributes to this phenomenon through personalization algorithms—such as those used in social media platforms—that tailor content based on users’ preferences, behaviors, and prior engagements. The result is an echo chamber or “bubble” in which conflicting or diverse perspectives are underrepresented or entirely absent. This limits opportunities for encountering alternative viewpoints, reduces the likelihood of challenging one’s own beliefs, and weakens the capacity for critical reflection and belief revision.

Deep learning of theories and principles helps counter this effect by fostering active analysis, source evaluation, and awareness of bias—including in AI-generated content. As learners develop more nuanced understanding and metacognitive awareness, they become better equipped to recognize when their beliefs are being subtly reinforced, to seek out contrasting viewpoints, and to revise their thinking when confronted with credible, diverse evidence. In this way, deep, reflective learning empowers individuals to navigate AI-influenced information environments with greater intellectual independence and critical insight.

An Example of How Deep Learning Counters the Epistemic Risks of AI Reliance

AI-powered platforms often recommend financial content—articles, videos, or investment ideas—based on a user’s past interests or behavior. Over time, this personalization can create an epistemic bubble, reinforcing certain market views (e.g., bullish sentiment on tech stocks) while filtering out dissenting analyses. Without a strong foundation in financial theory, users may accept these repeated narratives uncritically, mistaking frequency for credibility.

Deep learning in finance—such as studying risk-return tradeoffs, behavioral biases, and valuation models—helps users break out of this bubble. It trains them to evaluate claims, assess underlying assumptions, and question whether the content aligns with sound principles. As their understanding matures, they become more aware of how AI-curated feeds may be nudging them toward certain biases, such as confirmation bias or herd behavior.

Furthermore, deep financial learning cultivates metacognitive skills—encouraging investors to reflect on how their beliefs are shaped, and to intentionally seek out contrarian views, historical counterexamples, or alternative asset classes. This allows them to revise their positions when warranted, not because an algorithm said so, but because their judgment—grounded in theory and critical reasoning—demands it. In this way, deep learning strengthens the ability to navigate AI-influenced financial information with greater discipline, insight, and independence.
